Craig Overton, Somerset all-rounder, played one of the greatest T20 innings in county cricket history to single-handedly rescue his team from the brink of defeat at Yorkshire. Overton's explosive unbeaten 79 off just 30 balls, studded with eight fours and five sixes, powered Somerset to a memorable two-wicket victory chasing 162 at Headingley, securing their sixth successive T20 Blast Finals Day appearance.

The stunning recovery came after Somerset had collapsed to 82 for 8 in the 15th over, seemingly dead and buried against a dominant Yorkshire attack. Overton's intervention transformed the impossible into the inevitable.

He hit the winning runs off the final delivery of the match, sending Somerset to Finals Day on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at Edgbaston. The defending champions now trail only the hosts in terms of multiple Blast titles in the modern era.

"I've never struck the ball like that. And to do it in this scenario, when the team needed it most, is pretty special. We're pretty buzzing up there," said Overton on BBC Radio.

Can Somerset win a third title in four years?

Overton revealed how the match shifted when Lewis Gregory departed.

The all-rounder was honest about his assessment at that moment and how he shifted his approach to bring his side back into contention.

"I thought it was possible when me and Lewis were there. If we get two or three good overs, and need 50 off three, we thought we might have a chance. But when Lewis was out I thought it was, not dead and gone, but there was a 99% chance we were losing that game," Overton said.

"It was about trying to take much of the strike as possible. Try and maneuver the field to be able to get it in my way. Obviously the final couple of overs it was just about swing, and try and take every ball as it comes.

Luckily, one of those ridiculous, super-heroic knocks has won the game for us, I don't know how to describe it really," he added.

We can win it from anywhere: Overton

The victory on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, boosted Somerset's confidence heading into Finals Day. Overton stressed the importance of the comeback for his squad's state of mind.

"This gives us great confidence to know that we can win it from anywhere. No team is going to want to play us, knowing that we can bat all the way down.

We're just happy that we're still in with a chance of retaining our title on Finals Day," Overton concluded.

The defending champions' dramatic win has set up a semi-final meeting with Northamptonshire on Saturday, as Somerset seek to claim a third T20 Blast crown in four years.
