Virat Kohli has received a big boost as far as his international career is concerned. Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector, and head coach Gautam Gambhir are on the same page when it comes to Kohli’s chances of playing in the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe. He is an automatic choice considering his form and fitness despite retiring from T20I and Test cricket. Kohli has shown consistency in the only format he plays, with match-winning contributions against all the rival teams.
However, the situation is not in favor of veteran Rohit Sharma, and he is not in the scheme of things. If Rohit is given more chances after the ENG vs IND 2026 ODI series, Yashasvi Jaiswal would not be ready for the global tournament. Earlier, the selection panel and Rohit were not on the same page when he decided to retire from Test cricket.
According to sources, the selectors didn’t want the former captain to take a call after playing two of five Tests against England. On the other hand, the people close to Rohit revealed that he never spoke about playing in two red-ball games and was ready to compete in the entire bilateral assignment.
Meanwhile, it is almost confirmed that Rohit’s international career is coming to an end, and he has been informed about the plans. If he decides to carry on, the selectors will not consider him for selection in the future as Jaiswal is set to replace him in the opening slot. According to the Indian Express, the selectors met him on the sidelines of the ODI series in England in the presence of head coach Gautam Gambhir. He was clearly told that there is no chance for him to travel to the next ODI World Cup, and he should take a call on his future.
The ENG vs IND 3rd ODI at Lord’s will be Rohit’s last in national colors. In his last ODIs, the 39-year-old has scored 241 runs at an average of 30.1 and a strike rate of 88.6, with one fifty.
Agarkar is in Cardiff, and it is clear that the selectors are not looking at Rohit, the two-time T20 World Cup-winning player, for the next ICC event.
“The national selectors are keen on giving more matches to Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has scored two centuries in his last three ODI innings. There are around 20 games before the World Cup, and Jaiswal needs to play all the contests.
“No one can force Rohit to announce retirement, but the situation is clear that Jaiswal would play in the next home series against the West Indies in September. It is Rohit’s decision, and he needs to decide about his future,” a senior BCCI source privy to selection matters told PTI on condition of anonymity.
