Delhi: Former Indian Under-19 cricketer and Jaffna Kings co-owner Manjot Kalra has been sent to judicial custody till July 31 by a Sri Lankan court. He was arrested in an alleged corruption case to the 2026 Lanka Premier League (LPL). After the arrest, the case was heard in the Colombo court, where the investigating agencies presented many important claims.

Accused of contacting players

According to local media reports, investigating officers told the court that Manjot Kalra is accused of contacting Sri Lankan players Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Dunith Velalage and Avishka Fernando. Investigative agencies claim that players were offered huge sums of money to influence the results of matches. According to officials, the amount of this alleged proposal is said to be more than 30 thousand US dollars.

Investigating agencies claim to have evidence

According to the information presented in the court, the team investigating the case identified some phone call recordings and video material as important evidence.

Officials say that on the basis of this evidence, a thorough investigation of the case is being carried forward and many aspects are being investigated.

The defense rejected the allegations

On the other hand, the lawyers appearing on behalf of Manjot Kalra have termed all the allegations as baseless. The defense says that their client has no connection with any kind of illegal activity and the truth will come out after the investigation is completed.

The arrest was made before the start of the tournament

The Special Investigation Unit had detained Manjot Kalra on July 16.

This action was taken a few hours before the opening match of Lanka Premier League 2026. Considering the sensitivity of the case, the investigating agencies are continuously busy collecting evidence.

Sri Lanka Cricket assured cooperation

Sri Lanka Cricket has also made its stand clear on this entire matter. The Board has said that it is providing all possible cooperation to the Special Investigation Unit, so that a fair and transparent investigation of the case can be ensured. At present, the investigation is going on and the court has ordered to keep Manjot Kalra in judicial custody till July 31.
