In an interview with ANI, the right-handed batsman said, “I am going through a transitional phase in my life right now. The phase where my cricket is probably close to retirement and a new phase will start soon. I believe cricket or any sport has an age limit. You can play your best till you are at a certain age. I have maximum 1-2 years or a little more of cricket left in my life.”

He further said, “I tried to perform well in this year's IPL. I prepared accordingly before the tournament, but my luck was bad. Unfortunately I got injured in this year's IPL. I got to play only 4-5 matches for Punjab Kings. I got injured and wasted most of my time. It took time to recover. I am still not fully fit, so I have to think about other things to play cricket.”

Meanwhile, Punjab Kings (PBKS) had a disappointing performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Shikhar's Punjab team finished ninth in the league table. Punjab Kings lost to RCB by 60 runs in their last match. Dhawan suffered a shoulder injury against Sunrisers Hyderabad on 9 April.
