In the second qualifier of the IPL 2024 in Chennai, Sunrisers Hyderabad defeated Rajasthan Royals by 36 runs. RR folded at 139/7 in 20 overs while chasing 176, despite an impressive knock from Dhruv Jurel (56*). Abhishek Sharma claimed two wickets while Shahbaz Ahmed dismissed three batters for the SRH.
In the first innings, Heinrich Klaasen’s 50 off 34 balls helped SRH put a total of 175/9 in 20 overs. Trent Boult and Avesh Khan both claimed three wickets for Rajasthan.
After the game, RR skipper Sanju Samson praised the influence of veteran pacer Sandeep Sharma and compared him to Jasprit Bumrah.
“I am thrilled for him. Despite not being selected in the auction, he returned as a replacement player and delivered an outstanding performance with his bowling. Looking at the number of overs in the last two years, Sandeep Sharma has emerged as the next top bowler after Jasprit Bumrah. He has done an excellent job,” said Samson.
This season, Sandeep has claimed 13 wickets in 11 matches at an economy rate of 8.18, proving pivotal for Rajasthan Royals in difficult situations. Skipper Sanju Samson frequently turned to Sandeep instead of Trent Boult and Avesh Khan. However, Sandeep’s international career has been hampered by recurring injuries since his last appearance for India in 2015.
Samson was questioned about SRH and KKR’s clash in the final. “The conditions are favorable to both the teams, so let’s watch how they play in the powerplay. SRH’s batting has been exciting and they can certainly win the game. KKR, who appear to be quite dynamic, will also be confident. It will be a fascinating contest and that’s what IPL is delivering from the past 16 years.”
