Sarfaraz Khan will replace the injured Sai Sudharsan in India’s squad for the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka starting on August 15 in Galle.

For Sarfaraz, who has played six Tests so far and scored 371 runs at an average of 37.10, it marks a return to the red-ball squad for the first time in nearly two years. The 28-year-old last donned the whites in India’s 3-0 series defeat against New Zealand at home in November 2024.

The middle-order batter registered scores of 0 and 1 in the third Test before losing his place in the playing eleven.

Sarfaraz was part of the 18-member squad for the 2024-25 Border Gavaskar Trophy, but did not play in any of the five Tests as India succumbed to a 3-1 defeat against Australia.

However, it remains to be seen if he’ll immediately be given a chance to play, considering Devdutt Padikkal is likely to take Sudharsan’s number three spot in the side.

Sarfaraz also comes into the series on the back of a prolific Ranji season in 2025/26, in which he scored 429 runs from nine innings for Mumbai at an average of 53.62, with a highest score of 227.
