However, as Australia appears to be struggling against the plucky visitors, one familiar face seems to rise to the occasion as Steve Smith looks set to make a return to the slips after posting a well-timed 71 for Australia, before falling to an excellent spell of bowling by Hasan Mahmud.

Steve Smith in pursuit of Joe Root

Coming into the Test match as Australia's Steve Smith trails Joe Root by three catches, the former captain has had his share of challenges early in the game. After Bangladesh got off to a flying start, edges were plentiful for Steve Smith, who loves a slip as much as any other former captain.

In a spectacular display of slip fielding, Smith removed three crucial wickets at second slip:

With three wickets in the bag at second slip, Smith equaled Root's tally of 218 catches to become the second-highest Test fielder in history. Smith needed 42 fewer matches and 81 fewer innings to achieve the same.

Only one catch is separating him from the top spot. With Bangladesh on 324/6 at the end of the second day, Smith only needs one more catch to join the elite club of the best-ever Test fielders. With the new ball already gone for the day and no further new balls likely to be taken, Australia's chances of forcing late runs and getting their man depend on Lyon's leg breaks.

However, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Hasan Mahmud at the other end, Bangladesh looks determined not to allow any further Australian successes before the end of play.
