It happened on the final ball of the 11th over of the first session when Rahul neatly drove a flighted delivery from Keshara Nuwantha towards mid-on and set off for a single. Jaiswal responded to the call and took off as well, but the bowler dived to his right in an attempt to stop the ball and collided with the Indian batter.

Jaiswal lost his footing and fell to the ground, while Rahul, who had already reached almost halfway down the pitch, saw the ball being collected quickly at mid-on and hesitated.

Jaiswal also appeared unsure after getting back on his feet, but then signalled that he wanted to go through with the run. Rahul responded by reversing direction and running towards the bowler’s end.

But Jaiswal suddenly changed his mind again and attempted to return to the bowler’s end, leaving both batters stranded at the same end. Rahul made his ground first, leaving Jaiswal short of his crease.

The fielder threw the ball to wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella, who initially did not take the bails off. Instead, he turned towards captain Dhananjaya de Silva at slip, who appeared to gesture that there was no issue with completing the run-out. Dickwella then disturbed the stumps.

The umpires subsequently checked whether Sri Lanka had made a valid appeal before confirming Jaiswal’s dismissal.

Jaiswal was eventually dismissed for 32 off 37 balls, having hit five fours.

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar, who was in the commentary box, was left stunned by the mix-up. He felt there was a run on offer but believed Jaiswal lost his way in the confusion.

“I think that was a run. KL Rahul is going to make his end quite comfortably; it’s just that Jaiswal seemed to be lost in his own world,” he said.

Earlier, India won the toss and opted to bat first against Sri Lanka in what is their first appearance at the venue since 2017. It is also India’s first tour of Sri Lanka for a red-ball series in almost a decade.
