Shubman Gill WTC Record: Shubman Gill added another significant achievement to his rapidly growing Test career on Sunday, rewriting India's record books during the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo. The 26-year-old became the first Indian captain to score at least 1,000 runs in a single World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, surpassing the previous benchmark set by Virat Kohli. Gill entered the Test with 976 runs in the ongoing WTC cycle and needed only 25 more to move past Kohli's record of 932 runs, which the former India captain established during the 2019-21 cycle.

Gill Overtakes Kohli In WTC Run-Scoring Record

Shubman Gill's latest achievement underlines the remarkable consistency he has shown since taking charge of the Test side.

Across 11 matches and 18 innings in the current cycle, he has accumulated 1,111 runs at a staggering average of 74.06.

Gill's tally includes six centuries and one half-century, with his highest score being an impressive 269.

The milestone also highlights how comfortably Gill has handled the additional responsibility of leading India. Rather than affecting his batting, captaincy has coincided with one of the most productive phases of his Test career.

Kohli's 932 runs in the 2019-21 WTC cycle had previously stood as the highest tally by an Indian captain in a single edition of the championship.

Another Major Milestone For India's Test Captain

Shubman Gill's record-breaking day in Colombo was made even more memorable as he also completed 3,000 Test runs.

He became the fourth-youngest Indian batter to reach the landmark.

Sachin Tendulkar remains the youngest, having achieved the feat at 23 years and 228 days.

The latest milestones continue an extraordinary run of achievements for Gill, who has quickly established himself as one of the central figures in India's new-generation Test setup.

The historic landmarks came during a competitive opening session in the second Test.

Sri Lanka managed to remove both Indian openers, but India still reached 88/2 by lunch. Yashasvi Jaiswal made 45 from 53 deliveries, striking nine fours, before losing his wicket.

KL Rahul followed after scoring 18 off 33 balls, including two fours and a six.
