He became only the second Indian to score a Test century while batting at No. 7 or lower in Sri Lanka. Hardik Pandya was the first, scoring 108 against Sri Lanka in Pallekele in 2017.

Jurel's innings also continued a recent trend of India's lower-order batters making significant contributions in Test cricket. Nitish Kumar Reddy had scored 114 against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2024 while batting at No. 7 or below.

For Jurel, the century further strengthens his credentials as a dependable option in India's Test middle order.

India eventually declared their first innings at 503/9 during the third session on Day 2.

Devdutt Padikkal was the leading run-scorer, making 117 with 12 fours. Jurel remained unbeaten on 115, while Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill also contributed half-centuries.

Pant scored 63, including six fours and two sixes, while Gill made 50 with six fours.

Sri Lanka's bowlers eventually managed to break through India's lower order, with Asitha Fernando finishing with four wickets. Prabath Jayasuriya and Keshara Nuwantha claimed two wickets each, while Lahiru Kumara took one.
