When Tilak Varma walked out to bat at number four, the South Zone's reply to North Zone's first-innings tally of 195 was already reeling at 39 for 2. It only got worse soon after as pacer Gurnoor Brar dismantled the batting lineup, removing four of the first five wickets to set South Zone on the ropes at 80 for 5. With North Zone looking to gain an important first-innings lead, the South Zone The captain stood tall, taking the match by the scruff of the neck to completely change the momentum in a tie-deciding semifinal.

The Counter-Attack: A 175-Run Lifeline by Tilak Varma

Staying firm on the crease under pressure, the left-hander found an able companion in Shreyas Gopal as the pair launched a furious rescue mission which saw them survive the North attack for a colossal 334 deliveries and ultimately post a match-turning 175-run stand for the sixth wicket.

As Tilak settled into his groove, the left-hander notched up his eighth first-class hundred in just his 24th knock while Gopal stood firm at the other end before being well caught and bowled by Arshdeep Singh.

Gopal's dismissal sparked another mini-collapse as South Zone tumbled from 255 for 5 to 270 for 9 with Tilak once again proving to be the fulcrum of the innings. Farming the strike with number 11 Kavuri Saiteja, the skipper added 42 crucial runs for the last wicket to propel his side to 312 for 9, good for a mighty 113-run lead in the process.

Tilak remained not out on 116 from 250 balls as he displayed a mixture of solid technique and temperament in the middle.

Opportunity to Stake Claim for National Honors

The knock has come at a perfect time for the 23-year-old, who is already a first-choice player for the T20I team but has struggled to make an impact in the 50-over format. With 1,645runs at a strike rate of 145.18 in his 59 T20I appearances, including two centuries, Tilak has been in stunning form but has only managed to play five ODIs, his last appearance coming in December 2025. This innings will go a long way towards his selection chances for next year's World Cup.

Chasing down 195 with the bat, North Zone were well supported by Qamran Iqbal's 76 but were well contained by Vidwath Kaverappa's excellent 4 for 66.

By the time the second session of Day 3 got underway, North Zone had begun their fightback as they reached 123 for 1, only six runs adrift of their opponents and with Sanat Sangwan and Ayush Doseja in fine touch in their second essay.
