Chennai Super Kings (CSK) former captain MS Dhoni has strongly rejected reports of the company demanding a 25 percent ownership stake in the franchise, terming it as baseless.

Rumors about Dhoni’s alleged stake demand spread quickly on social media, suggesting that talks between the legendary cricketer and the CSK management had reached an impasse. However, the franchise has now clarified that no such discussion ever took place.

CSK official rejects MS Dhoni’s 25% ownership demand

According to reports circulating online, Dhoni had reportedly demanded a 25 percent stake in CSK. The claim suggested that he later reduced his demand to 20 percent, while the franchisee only offered 5.5 percent.

These claims have now been dismissed by a senior CSK official.

Speaking to Cricbuzz, the official said that Dhoni never approached the franchise about the ownership arrangement.

“MS never asked us about this. We never discussed this matter. We are also not aware that he discussed this with Mr N Srinivasan.”

The statement ends speculation that Dhoni and CSK were in talks over a significant stake transfer.

What is Dhoni’s actual stake in CSK?

Although Dhoni does not own 25 per cent stake in the franchise, he has an existing financial relationship with Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited (CSKCL).

CSKCL is an unlisted company, which means its shares are not traded on public stock exchanges such as NSE or BSE. Transactions to its shares take place privately.

Dhoni is estimated to have more than 100,000 shares in the company. Compared to the more than 30 crore issued shares, his stake represents only a small percentage of the total capital.

Dhoni’s current shareholding is valued at around ₹2.6 crore to ₹3 crore, dramatically different from the value of a 25 per cent stake.

N Srinivasan family retains control over CSKCL

The ownership structure also provides important context for the viral claim.

Former BCCI president N Srinivasan and his family are understood to retain a controlling interest of more than 55 per cent in Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited.

This makes the sudden transfer of a quarter of the company to Dhoni a significant business transaction, and not a simple adjustment to the former captain’s existing relationship.

Aakash Chopra questioned the claim of 25% stake

Former Indian cricketer and analyst Akash Chopra also questioned the financial logic behind the reports.

With the major IPL franchises valued at between $1.5 billion and $1.8 billion, a 25 percent stake could theoretically be worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Chopra also pointed out that such a stake would require a huge financial investment and not just be handed over.

“Nobody gives anyone $400 million for free. To get a 25 percent stake, you have to invest that money.”

They highlighted CSK’s status as one of the biggest brands in the IPL, making the reported figures even more difficult to accept at face value.

Dhoni remains one of the most influential figures in CSK’s history, having led the franchise to multiple IPL titles and becoming synonymous with the team’s identity.

For now, the franchise has made its position clear: There has been no negotiation on the 25 per cent stake, and reports of a business standoff between Dhoni and CSK do not reflect the club’s position.
